The Puerta de Alcalá was originally built in 1778 by Carlos III.   It was built to improve the looks of the eastern part of Madrid and until the mid-19th century defined the eastern boundary of the city. It now stands in the always busy Plaza de la Independencia.  Usually photographs such as the one above show it at night.  It is one of Madrid's most famous landmarks.
