The Plaza Mayor was built from 1617-1618.  In the center of the square is an equestrian statue of Felipe III who ordered the building of the square.   The Plaza Mayor was the "center-point" of Madrid.  Everything important was held here including bullfights, pageants and even public executions.   Although difficult to see in the center of the photograph is the Casa de la Panaderia.  Its façade is decorated with allegorical paintings.  While most of the larger cities in Spain and even in the "Spanish-Speaking World" have a Plaza Major, when people refer to the Plaza Major (without refering to a specific location) they always mean the Plaza Major in Madrid.
