Castilla y León was only formed in 1983 when the regions of Castilla la Vieja and Leon were united. It is the largest region in Spain. This region includes, Salamanca, home of the University of Salamanca, founded in 1411. Also the city of Valladolid, which is not only the current capital of the region, but also a former capital of Spain. It is where Queen Isabella and Ferdinand where married. Isabella was crowned Queen of Spain in Segovia's Plaza Mayor. The people here are said to speak the purest form of Spanish. The crest and flag of the region includes both castles and lions.
