CARLOS V (1500 - 1558)
"Con mi caballo hablo en alemán, con las damas de la corte, en italiano; los asuntos de hombres los trato en frances, pero para hablar con Dios, uso solo el español"
Carlos V was the last great emperor of the world. His empire was huge and included Belgium, Holland (Netherlands), Germany, Austria, southern Italy, the city of Milan (in northern Italy), Spain and all of South and Central America that was discovered to that point. He spent his entire time as Emperor trying to preserve the unity of Europe. The only major kingdom over which he had no control was France.
He did not live during a peaceful time. He went to war six times with France (his great enemy). He also went to war with Turkey which was a great Muslim empire. In Germany, a monk named Martin Luther was beginning to rebel against the Catholic church and would lead a great revolt. Many new Protestant religions, such as the Lutheran would arise out of this revolt. Many wars were fought between the Catholics and the Protestants during Carlos' lifetime.
Carlos was an extremely religious man. Carlos was very bothered by the new Protestant religions because his main aspiration was to keep all of Europe unified through the Catholic church.
